Test Specification Chart

External Assessment (Written Examination)

Reading and writing skills will be assessed through a written examination.
Grammar will be assessed as part of the writing section.
The test will follow the specification given below.


A. Reading (40 marks)

The reading section consists of four reading tasks.

Reading 1 – Seen text

  • One short text taken from the textbook
  • One type of comprehension question
  • Marks: 5
  • Length: about 100 words

Reading 2 – Seen text

  • One short text taken from the textbook
  • Two types of comprehension questions
  • Marks: 10
  • Length: about 200 words

Reading 3 – Unseen text

  • One short text not taken from the textbook
  • Two types of comprehension questions
  • Marks: 10
  • Length: about 200 words

Reading 4 – Unseen text

  • One short text not taken from the textbook
  • Three types of comprehension questions
  • Marks: 15
  • Length: about 300 words

Notes for Reading

Text types for Reading 3
Story, notice, advertisement, product guide, letter, news story, brochure, instruction/manual, diary entry, interview and recipe.

Text types for Reading 4
Biography, autobiography, essay, newspaper or magazine article, science article, book review or film review, travelogue, editorial, report and blog post.

  • Total number of test items: 40
  • Question types:
    True/False, Fill in the gaps, Multiple choice, Matching, Ordering and Short-answer questions.
  • Except short-answer questions, the same type of questions must not be repeated in the two seen passages.
    The same rule applies to the two unseen passages.
  • Only Reading 4 will include questions for testing vocabulary.
  • Comprehension questions (except vocabulary) must cover:
    • Literal Comprehension (LC)
    • Reorganization (R)
    • Inference (I)
    • Evaluation (E)

B. Writing (35 marks)

The writing section consists of four writing tasks and a grammar section.

1. Guided Writing I

  • Paragraph, description of tables/charts/diagrams, set of instructions, recipe, advertisement, notice, or rules and regulations
  • Marks: 5
  • Length: about 100 words

2. Guided Writing II

  • News story, skeleton story, message of condolence, message of congratulations, invitation letter, thank-you letter or biography
  • Marks: 5
  • Length: about 100 words

3. Free Writing I

  • Paragraph (views, opinions, experiences or feelings), leave application, job application or dialogue
  • Marks: 6
  • Length: about 150 words

4. Free Writing II

  • Personal or official letter, letter to the editor, email, short essay (narrative, argumentative or descriptive), diary, newspaper article, book review or film review
  • Marks: 8
  • Length: about 200 words

Notes for Writing

In the writing section, the following will be assessed:

  • organisation
  • coherence and cohesion
  • subject matter
  • appropriateness and correctness of language
  • range of vocabulary
  • layout

The writing task must not be of the same type as any of the reading texts included in the question paper.


5. Grammar (11 marks)

The grammar section will cover the following areas:

  1. Articles
  2. Prepositions
  3. Tense
  4. Connectives
  5. Question tags
  6. Reported speech
  7. Voice
  8. Conditional sentences
  9. Subject–verb agreement
  10. Interrogation and negation
  11. Causatives
  12. Modals
  13. Relative pronouns
  14. Adjectives and adverbs

Types of grammar questions

1. Reproduction / Transformation
This will include:

  • tense
  • question tags
  • reported speech
  • voice
  • interrogation (wh-questions)
  • negation
    Marks: 6 × 1 = 6

2. Multiple-choice questions (in a contextual passage)
These may include:

  • articles, prepositions, tense, question tags, voice, reported speech, connectives, conditional sentences, subject–verb agreement, causative verbs, modals, adjectives and adverbs, and relative pronouns
    Marks: 10 × 0.5 = 5

Each multiple-choice item must contain four options.
